Questions about the pistons and oil consumption

Messagede A_Pit le 27 Nov 2012 13:39

Good afternoon. I apologize for using English instead of French. Unfortunately, I don't know French at all, so I decided that English will be more understandable than the result of translation into French with the help of Google-translate.
I have a TDR 125 5ae (2000), nearly 32,000 km mileage, so I decided to change piston and to make all possible preventive procedures. I have a few questions:
1. Piston. From the article this article, I realized that I need a piston with a dome on top for my 5AE. But here, for example, flat piston is listed as suitable for the TDR 2000. Can I buy this one for my TDR (if the piston fit the size of the cylinder, of course)?
Many sellers indicate in the description of the piston that it is suitable for TDR, DT and TZR, such as ebay1 and ebay2. Should I believe this? I have my doubts because the OEM part numbers is not the same (4FU-11631-01-A0 for the TDR 2000 and 3MB-11631-02-95 for DT125R 2000).
Can I use the piston for 4GM (like this or piston kit from wemoto) on 5AE?
I would be very grateful if anyone advise me what piston I should buy and where I can do it.
2. Oil consumption. My bike consumes one liter of oil per 600-800 km (fuel consumption of 4.5 liters per 100 km). As I understand it, this is quite a lot. The pump is adjusted as shown here Image.
Are there any other ways to adjust it? May be I should replace some part of pump to fix the problem with oil consumtion?

I apologize for so many questions.
Also, I apologize if the answers to my questions have already been given - it is difficult to use the search well without knowing French.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi,

For piston dimensions, look in Mitaka's database here:
http://www.mitaka.co.uk/PISTON%20DATABASE/PAGEPage3.html

Image

Apparently your model is not listed, but there are often equivalences. I am sure that another member (Phifi?) will tell.

The oil pump is an alternating piston type. Its flow is the product of pump bore section x stroke x speed. Bore is fixed. Speed is proportional to engine rpm. Stroke depends on throttle position (via cable and ramp) and is the only thing you can adjust. Since oil is not compressible you cannot restrict the flow in any way.

Of course you could bypass part of the flow back to the oil tank, or even dilute the oil with petrol, but I hope someone will come up with a better idea. :?

Your consumption corresponds to a 1:30 premix (3.3 - 3.4%). This could be normal if you run the bike hard all the time. But then your fuel consumption would be higher... :-k

You need flat piston, without dome

Flat piston on my 5AE...

If the cable is OK, oilpump is adjusted by using washers. This adjusts the amplitude of movement of the piston pump. You shouldn't have to touch it except if it has been misadjusted before...

maybe you will have too install a thinner washer?
Here is where to find lot of details viewtopic.php?f=26&t=10041

Spocky is right. I thought there was no washer adjustment on this model, but if there is one this is definitely the solution.

Piston. Tell me, please, whether the piston can be equally applicable to TDR, DT and TZR simultaneously, like this seller says in description of item?
Or it couldn't be so and it's necessary to search for the piston to be listed as suitable only for the TDR?

Pump. I still don't understand properly where exactly the washer should be used to adjust the oil pump, but I think it will become clear when I will disassemble the pump.

Thank you very much for your help, guys.

The piston is not specific to the bike but rather the type of engine. this offer seems correct, but a precaution would be to check the cylinder size before ordering a piston.

Check this site http://www.3as-racing.com/CT-23348-2000.aspx that's where I've order my last piston for 1998 TDR

Oil pump: yes, disassemble it, then you will find one or more thin brass washer(s)

Spocky35, thanks for your advice.
I already contacted with 3as-racing.com. Unfortunately, they don't send parts to Belarus. :(

Hello.
My new question does not correspond to the topic, but I decided not to create a new one and ask here.
I disassembled the engine of my TDR 5ae 2000 and found scratches on the inner side of the cylinder. Cylinder has nicasil coating so ,as I understand it, it must be replaced. My friend-mechanic advised me to buy a used cylinder with cast iron liner, re-bore it and install a suitable piston. I found a seller who sells inexpensive cylinder with cast-iron sleeve. He says it is 3mb. Can I buy this cylinder and set it on my TDR? Is it compatible with power valve and the cylinder head from my old cylinder (there are "4fu00" is written on the side my old cylinder)?
Or I also need to buy a different power valve?
Is it possible to find a 4FU cylinder with cast iron liner? Or all 4FU cylinders - nikasil, all 3mb cylinders - cast iron liner?
I hope someone can help me.

[-X 4FU powervalves and 3 MB are different, they are not interchangeable.

BRIO, no problem. :)
Thank you very much for your answers.
What about a cylinder head? Is cylinder head from 4FU compatible with 3MB?
I think I read somewhere that the cylinder head from 3MB better, more productive, than 4FU, it really so?

It is better to match piston to head-cylinder than cylinder with head-cylinder. You must have a flat piston with a 4FU head-cylinder and a convex one with a 3MB head-cylinder.

I recommend a convex piston and 3MB head-cylinder with your 3MB cylinder.
